THE MAKER
A life with clay
and glaze.
Meet Yu Zhinan and his continuing exploration of the Jizhou kiln tradition.
Jizhou kiln ceramic firing tradition · Level 1 ceramic craft technician
Born in Yugan, Jiangxi, Yu Zhinan was drawn to painting and calligraphy from childhood. After studying art education, he came to Jingdezhen to learn traditional gucai ceramic painting with Jie Jinping. A visit to the Jizhou kilns sparked a lasting interest in the colour and texture of old glaze fragments.
His practice explores tortoiseshell, hare's-fur and tiger-skin glazes, natural leaf patterns, paper-cut decoration, painting and clay modelling, continuing a dialogue between inherited techniques and new work.
He is a member of the Sichuan Artists Association and vice president of the Jizhou Kiln Ceramics Association.
